Finish Me

Description

I made fourty of these and left them on the stairs for people to take and "Finish" I only got twenty of them back but that's good going all the same, I'll put a few of the more intresting responces into my scraps when I get around to it... and oh yeah there's a big mad concept:

Finish Me

· Personal side of fox / of art – exposure – sacrifice – dignity – privacy?
· Androgynous Outline
· Socks – Still me
· 45 printed, got 20 back,
· Repetition makes interesting discrepancies in pattern
· Colloquial associations with term “finish me”
· Are we finished our do we need to exist in the minds of others before we are truly real? Do other people dilute my personality? Am I my real self alone or with others?

It Is difficult for an animal to have a position of power in art unless it is anthropomorphised in such a way as to give it the illusion of having the [potential to understand it’s situation – to understand what it could mean to be in a picture.

Therefore animals are usually disabled impotent passengers in art – tools put to use. Life drawing models are still used in this way, their individuality is stripped through classical poses and classic attitudes.

This helplessness interests me in it’s relation to the lack of control we have over how people interpret our work or the ideas they get of who we are from our work or even our appearance, way of acting, etc.

Once in first year we were told to start drawing objects in front of us. After about 10 minutes we had to swap places and finish each other’s drawings. There was a horrible weight of responsibility in working on someone else’s drawing, as well as worry about your own and feeling it is no longer yours.
I had a dream I drew a picture of myself and in class someone else started fixing it/ finishing it and this made me feel very sick, it felt wrong.

I think this relates to the sacrifice we have to make in making art / expressing ideas and allowing the possibility for them to be interpreted, putting ourselves out there to be judged and changed, shadowed in the mind of someone else.

In drawing a fox I am anthropomorphising it, and in making it an extension of myself, a I am forcing my own views onto the animal, making it self aware in away, there is a conflict between this and the natural reality of the fox and I wonder if it isn’t disrespectful.
If I am going to use the image of the fox in the way that I do, I should do something to understand that sacrifice, to understand what I am doing in controlling their image and using it in such a negative way. So I offered up my own image.
